We have succeeded in development of an odor sensor for alcohol, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. We have a technology to apply fragrance to improve the health of people. We are now working for development of ‘a sensor to detect cancers’ that can detect cancer cells by their smells. The effectiveness of detecting diseases by sensing smells contained in our breath and body odor is increasing through studies of dogs sniffing out cancers.

In the future, it is necessary to address the study from both a biomedical and physical/engineering approaches of detecting types of diseases from smells and developing a sensor system respectively. We are currently promoting the research in cooperation with cancer institutions and universities and research institutions in and out of Japan.

2.The signal is received by olfactory mucosa and transmits it to the brain in a form of an electric signal.

3.The brain senses it a cancer smell.

We are now developing a cancer smell detection sensor for identifying the risk of breast cancer in cooperation with doctors of university hospitals, aiming at releasing the products within this year. For this purpose, a limited liability partnership has been concluded with a major company to sell the system to individual users. The size of the system is as small as that of a mobile phone. It accurately identifies and detects special ‘smelling substances’ that a breast cancer cell emits in a form of one-to-one reactions.
